Hi Friends,
I hope you’re having a good week!
Yesterday in class I taught one of my favorite example stories, Useful Sister by Weike Wang. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend checking it out.
I love the way this story portrays the unreliability of anyone’s understanding of their own family, and how adding siblings to the mix just adds more misunderstandings.
Today, again, I bumped into stories about siblings when I was researching author Sara Freeman for tonight’s class discussion of her story in the latest Best American Short Stories anthology. In this January 2022 Lithub article, Freeman shares a few of her favorite novels about siblings.
Do you love reading about siblings? Who are your favorites from literature?
This Week I’m:
Reading: The Celebrants by Steven Rowley. This has been on my tbr list for a while, and it did not disappoint. Sweet and a little sad, and life affirming.
Watching: Murder at the End of the World on Hulu/FX was a great thinky murder-mystery with sci-fi undercurrents.
Listening to: The Vibe Check podcast interview with Cord Jefferson because American Fiction deserves all the Oscars.
Take a Class with Me: Jumpstart Your Flash Fiction
A new month is approaching, and with it more writing classes!
Jumpstart Your Flash Fiction is a great bang for your buck — a one day (3 hours) online workshop to learn a little about flash fiction and get multiple stories of your own started. Class meets February 10th from 10:30am EST. Sign up at Grub Street.
Thanks for reading!
